China will discourage abortion. The country will make fertility treatment more accessible as part of efforts to increase birth rates. The National Health Authority of the country with the world’s lowest birth rate reported this information on Tuesday.
According to the guidelines published on the authority’s website, the tax, education insurance and housing system will be improved. In addition, local governments will be encouraged to expand child care services and family-friendly workplaces.
Authorities said they will conduct reproductive health campaigns to raise public awareness to prevent
unintended pregnancies and reduce medically unnecessary abortions.
In 2021, the female fertility rate in China was 1.16. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the rate should be 2.1 for a stable population. As a result, China’s fertility rate is very low, which is the lowest in the world.
Demographers say China’s uncompromising ‘zero-covid’ policy to curb the spread of the coronavirus may further reduce citizens’ desire to have children.
The birth rate in China, a country of 1.4 billion people, is going to decrease by a record amount this year. 1.6 million babies were born in the country last year. Compared to 2020, this number is 11.5 percent less. This year this number may further decrease to below one crore. Source: Reuters.
