Biden and his administration have been criticized by Democrats in Congress in the wake of a border crisis. The group has said that the administration is not doing enough to address the situation..”His administration’s response to the refugee crisis on our southern border is dangerously inadequate.”
Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., added that she was “very disappointed” in the president’s handling of the situation. President Obama has rejected criticism that he is not doing enough about the child migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexican border, saying that his administration has “pushed north” $116 million dollars in aid to care for the children.
The President noted that while some of this money would go into caring for the migrant children, other funds were included just to stop their flow from Central America. This move is extremely unpopular on both sides of the aisle with House Speaker John Boehner demanding that the president start enforcing existing immigration laws instead of funding programs to deal with the surge in trips across the Southern America border.
Biden stated that he is hopeful they can get more money allocated towards this crisis, “The President’s supplemental request will ask for more resources to meet our fundamental responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of unaccompanied children crossing our borders while continuing to guarantee the humane treatment of these young people.”
This includes a sustained border security surge – unprecedented in American history – that shuts off the flow from Central America and returns those who attempt to cross the border to Mexico where they belong. We also continue to ask Congress for additional resources as we address this challenge.”
Biden continued with his speech on Tuesday, “We’ve been working closely with Central American governments and regional partners on behalf of these children. Now I think it’s important that Americans understand what’s happening here. These kids are the victims of criminal organizations engaged in human trafficking.”
Biden went on to praise Mexico’s handling of border responsibility, “Mexico has stepped up to the plate under the Merida Initiative. We’re pleased with what they’ve done so far, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to continue to do more.”
In a statement to the press earlier today, rep. Roybal-Allard stated that she was pleased with the number of children that had been returned to their home country at least.the more than 2,000 unaccompanied minors here in California who have recently come into deportation proceedings. This flight will help send a message to smugglers and traffickers that the United States is serious about enforcing our laws. That’s simply good policy.”
President Obama attended another fundraiser in Dallas, Texas yesterday to help support advocacy for immigration reform. He has asked congress to send him a bill by the end of July, but so far talks have been delayed until after the August recess.
“I believe that now is the time to act,” said Obama during his speech on Tuesday, “We are now seeing a growing realization that the only way to comprehensively fix this broken immigration system is through a concerted effort in Congress.”
The Senate bill would be a good place for us to start when they return in September.”
