He has won eight world titles across different weight classes, and was named Fighter of the Decade for the 2000s by ESPN. Now, he is set to take on an even bigger challenge: running for president of his home country, The Philippines.
His promoter Bob Arum, however, seems very pessimistic about the whole thing. He said that Pacquiao is in over his head with this presidential run and that he has no chance of winning.
According to Boxing Scene, Bob Arum said: “Manny Pacquiao is a neophyte in politics. A lot of people will tell him he’s on the right track, but in the end the voters won’t vote for him.”
Arum claims that Manny Pacquiao may have gotten more votes simply because of his popularity. He said: “He is a national icon. People are running around saying they voted for Manny. But when it comes to the election, he won’t have a chance.”
Because Arum doesn’t seem to be too enthusiastic about this campaign run, some people are speculating that the promoter may want his prized fighter to get out of boxing. He wants Manny Pacquiao to retire from fighting and get into politics full time. And if he does win in his presidential bid, that would most likely mean the end of Manny Pacquiao’s boxing career.
Will this campaign stop Manny Pacquiao from continuing his boxing career? Or will he continue fighting and give it all up once he wins in his political fight? Only time will tell.
The fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao wasn’t as exciting as everyone expected it to be, but that hasn’t stopped the boxing world from being interested in the match.
A rematch is in the works, and there are already rumors about where it will be held. The Philippines has been mentioned as a possible location for this fight, but if Manny Pacquiao becomes president of that country it may not be happening at all.
The headlining fighter of Top Rank Promotions said that he thinks it’s still possible to hold the rematch in Manila. He said: “I think we would try and go back there and maybe look at other places where he fights, but I think we can get it done.”
Bob Arum thinks that if Manny Pacquiao gets elected president of The Philippines the fight will be off. And just like last time, he voiced his opinion about this matter. He said: “If Manny Pacquiao becomes president of the Philippines, forget about it.”
