The United Nations is holding COP26 in Poland this year, and the main topic of discussion is climate change. One major issue that they are discussing is deforestation. Deforestation has been a problem for many years now, but it’s not just about trees being cut down — people are losing their homes to natural disasters like mudslides and floods.
One major announcement made at COP26 was that world leaders have promised to end deforestation by 2030 with the help of 120 countries who have pledged their support. It will be an uphill battle, but if we work together then anything can happen!
One of the countries that has pledged its support is Indonesia. The Indonesian government has agreed to prevent natural disasters from being caused by deforestation and land degradation up until 2030.
In 2017, Indonesia lost 2 million hectares of forest to logging, palm oil plantations, and other agricultural purposes. It’s good to see action being taken as one-quarter of all greenhouse gases in the world can be traced back to deforestation.
Forest conservation is a big part of the fight against climate change, and hopefully other countries will follow Indonesia’s example.
This is a great example of non-profit organizations working with other, larger groups to have a wider impact. The fact that these world leaders have promised this is huge and shows the strides being made in the battle against climate change. New pledges may be announced soon which could make if more likely for them to actually stick. It’s up to us as individuals to do our part and help with this. Taking small steps like eating less meat, recycling, carpooling, or taking public transportation can make a big difference!
